storyfest

FIVESPARKS is bringing a storytelling festival back to Harvard, with its STORYfest event on August 29th!  Join the community for LIVE online programs throughout the day on Saturday, August 29. This one-day event features stories for every age group.  Free daytime programs include one-hour sessions with each of our storytellers, as well as a workshop with each, exploring the techniques of storytelling. The evening showcase will be the highlight of the event, and requests registration along with a suggested contribution. Award-winning storytellers Donald Davis and Bil Lepp will fill the stage with stories. Be prepared to laugh!

Come as you are! Bring the whole family. Storytellers will perform and enjoy the day's events from the comfort and safety of their own homes, and so can you.  This one-day storytelling event features stories for every age group. You will come home with a whole bushel of your own stories to tell!

We absolutely love serving you breakfast, lunch, and brunch on the Patio. Seeing old friends and new faces has been a salve to our souls. Here's a picture glimpse of the Patio. We want to thank everyone for wearing their masks (when not seated) and practicing safe social distancing! Together we will get through this.

keep it simple: dining tips from harvard’s marcia croyle

Keep it simple is my motto for summer meals. I try to buy ingredients from local farm stands, e.g., corn and tomatoes from Willard’s farm or peaches from Carlson’s. Farther afield, Hutchins Farm in Concord has a great selection of organic produce. If I’m out that way, I’ll always stop. Tomatoes are especially tasty right now, and they are a perfect side dish for grilled meats (hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages). Here is one of my favorite tomato salad recipes:

Cilantro, Tomato, and Corn Salad (Serves 6)

4-1/2 ears fresh corn

1/4 cup and 2 tablespoons butter, melted

3 tomatoes, chopped

1-1/2 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped

3/4 small red onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

3/4 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped

  1. Shuck corn, remove silks, and put in a pot of boiling water. Turn off the heat and let the corn sit for at least 10 minutes and no longer than 30. Remove corn from pot. When corn is cool enough to handle, slice the kernels from the cobs and place in a serving bowl.

  2. Stir butter into the corn and add tomatoes, jalapeno, red onion, garlic, and cilantro. Mix well. Season with salt and pepper to taste. You can serve the salad warm or put it in the fridge until ready to serve.

Bon appétit. Oh and don’t forget to add a Nashoba Bakery baguette from the General and keep the wine flowing. We love the Trimbach Pinot Gris and the Henri Bourgeois Sancerre Rosé !

Pick up the wine, then watch the video at the link below. Each video will be available for viewing through the summer.”

EPISODE 1 can be viewed here.

Harvard Hero series

Our friends (and upstairs neighbors) at the Harvard Press have produced a video series in collaboration with Harvard Cable TV and Everyday Boston called the FrontLine People Project. The series, spearheaded by Bromfield students, interviews Harvard residents who are helping our community get through the COVID crisis. We’ll be posting an episode each week!

Here's an interview with Harvard's Joyce Maiore a nurse at Emerson Hospital.

yoga with… alpacas!

Yoga With Alpacas at the Harvard Alpaca Ranch is a unique local experience where fun and smiles are 100% guaranteed! It’s a yoga class suitable for all levels with the twist that we practice outdoors while interacting with the alpacas.

The next session is August 29th with more dates to come in the fall. We also do group private events for up to 10 people. It’s a perfect and unusual way to bring a group of friends, family, coworkers, etc together in a socially safe distant way.

If interested contact yoga instructor Krista Schepanovsky kristaschep@gmail.com (whom you may know from upstairs yoga at the General) or the Harvard Alpaca Ranch.

a heartfelt thank you to the garden club

HGS is so grateful to Kathy Jackson and the Garden Club of Harvard for all their beautiful work on our outdoor patio planters. The planters are full of summer herbs, tomatoes and flowering treats that have set the ambiance for our entire patio. Plus, we’ve gotten to incorporate some of the herbs in our menu! We are so lucky to have neighbors and friends like Kathy and the Garden Club. Thank you!

cocktail of the week:

This cocktail is a play on the summertime classic— the G&T. To spice it up we’ve added freshly squeezed grapefruit juice to the mix. We love using our classic Hayman’s London Dry Gin and Fever-Tree tonic.

Look out for our upcoming Cocktail Kits! Stocked with mixer, spirit, garnish and recipe card. We’re starting with cocktails to beat the heat: Aperol Spritz, Moscow Mule and a classic G&T!

The General Gin & Tonic

2oz Hayman's London Dry Gin
3oz Fever Tree Tonic
1-2 oz Fresh grapefruit juice

Served on ice in a Tom Collins glass. Lime for garnish.
